Duplex and Quad GFCI Boxes

Quad and Duplex GFCI Boxes from Southwire/TRC

Contact Sords Electric HERE!

A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) can help prevent electrocution. If a person’s body starts to receive a shock, the GFCI senses this and cuts off the power before he/she can get injured.

According to the National Electrical Code, a “ground fault” is a conducting connection (whether intentional or accidental) between any electric conductor and any conducting material that is grounded or that may become grounded. Electricity always wants to find a path to the ground. In a ground fault, electricity has found a path to ground, but it is a path the electricity was never intended to be on, such as through a person’s body.

Because of this potential for shock, GFCI protection is used to protect human life.

Note: AFCIs should not be confused with GFCIs. While both AFCIs and GFCIs are important safety devices, they have different functions. AFCIs are intended to address fire hazards; GFCIs address shock hazards.

ATC 365 Long Ranger Timer

ATC Automatic timing and Controls 365C Long-Ranger Computing Timer from Sords Electric
Industry standard digital timer
Adjustable range 0.01 sec. to 999 hours
High brightness VF display
High noise immunity
UL recognized

The ATC 365C Timer is microprocessor-based digital timer with three rotary knobs for setting and adjustment of the Preset. The Preset can be any three-digit value from .01 Sec to 999 Hrs. The Decimal and Range are switch selectable. The high-intensity blue vacuum fluorescent display is DIP switch selectable to Timeup or Timedown. Two heavy-duty 7A DPDT relays provide instantaneous, interval or delayed output control. Plug-in panel mounting allows easy replacement without the removal of field wiring.
COMPUTATION: Through its internal microcomputer, the 365C keeps track of the set point throughout the time cycle. Whenever there is a change in set point, even during a cycle, it instantly re-computes the time remaining and accurately determines time-out. This unique capability is especially valuable in the time-down modes as it allows you to shorten a cycle without loss of accuracy.
POSITIVE RESET TIME AND PULSE LENGTH: Digitally clocked by the microcomputer, the 365C’s reset time is consistently of the same duration, regardless of variations in line voltage, power supply or time cycle. As a result, the 365C is not subject to false reset from momentary power interruptions (less than 30 ms). When the 365C operates in repeat-cycle mode, the output pulse is also digitally clocked so that both its occurrence and duration are consistent.
WIDE RANGE: Each 365C Long-Ranger covers the overall span of 0.01 sec. to 999 hrs., in nine switch-selected ranges of 0 to 9.99,99.9 or 999 sec., min. or hrs. The timer can be optimized within any selected range simply by removing appropriate selector knobs (e.g. with the timer in the 9.99 sec. range, you can obtain a tamper-proof span of 0.99 by setting the left selector at 0 and removing the knob).
PROGRAMMABLE DISPLAY: Depending on the position of an internal jumper, the 365C’s three-digit cycle progress display will time UP to or DOWN from the set point; after time-out, it will either STOP or GO (i.e. display the time elapsed after time-out). To the right of the three-digit display, a timing bar “–” blinks once per second during the timing cycle and rapidly after time-out. At left, a marker “∇” turns on when the delayed relay is energized. The 365C is also available without display but with a pilot light that blinks once per second during the cycle and rapidly after time-out.
NOISE IMMUNITY: The 365C has formidable defenses against noise: transformer power supply, full-wave bridges, buffered logic. Furthermore its microcomputer detects; and rejects; noise pulses that manage to penetrate its defenses. No industrial timer has ever offered greater noise immunity.
RELIABILITY AND RUGGEDNESS: ATC firmly believes that no industrial timer has ever achieved a higher level of reliability and ruggedness. The 365C’s electronic components have no moving parts and are assembled, virtually without hand wiring, from computer-tested circuit boards. Its few mechanical components have been selected for reliable service; the two load relays have a life expectancy of 100,000,000 operations and heavy-duty contacts rated at 7 amps; and the three rotary set point selector switches exhibit extremely low wear.
COMPACT, PLUG-IN AND DUST-TIGHT: Packaged in a 72mm2 DIN housing, the 365C occupies 40% less panel space than conventional timers. It is a true plug-in timer that can be replaced in seconds without disturbing housing or wiring. The 365C is also fully gasketed and O-ring sealed to be dust and water-tight.
SELF DIAGNOSTICS: The time will display “FAIL” anytime there is a problem or the knobs are in between digits.

Heating with Compressed Air

Sords Electric and Convectronics offer Compressed (flameless) Air Heating, up to 1400 degrees F.

The energy (kW) requirement is calculated from the following formula:

KW = SCFM x (Texit – Tinlet) (ΔT) / 2500

SCFM = Air flow in Standard* Cubic Feet per Minute
Tinlet = Inlet Air Temperature (°F) (typically 70°F)
Texit = Desired Exit Air Temperature (°F)
[The temperature difference is also know as delta T (ΔT) ]

Example: Heating 10 SCFM from ambient temperature (70°F) to 800°F:
KW = 10 SCFM x (800°F – 70°F) / 2500 = 2.9 kW

Conversion Formulas:

(Liters per Minute)/28.3 = Cubic Feet per Minute
°C = 5/9 (°F – 32)
°F = 9/5°C + 32

Using an Air Heater:

If used properly, heater life of 5000 hours or greater can be expected. To ensure long heater life and safe operation, follow these guidelines. Also read and understand your heater Operating Manual before use. Failure to follow these guidelines can result in heater damage, failure, or personal injury.

Air Sources:

In general, compressed air, and air from regenerative blowers may be used to supply Convectronics flameless air heaters. Your air source should be clean and dry. Dirt, grease, oil, or oil vapors, or corrosive or reactive gases will damage an air heater. Also, use air or inert gas only. Do not use with volatile or combustible gases.

Regenerative Blowers:

Regenerative blowers are compact and inexpensive clean air sources. They can provide large amounts of low-pressure air for your air heating system.

Compressed Air:

Compressed air is commonly available in most factories. It is high-pressure regulated air (typically to 100psi), and often contains oil for lubricating pneumatic valves and equipment. You must filter this oil to prevent fouling and damage to Convectronics electric air heater elements.

When measuring compressed air flow rates, be sure you are measuring Standard CFM or Standard LPM units. The "Standard" means that the units are measured at standard temperature and pressure. Many flow meters are labeled SCFM, but this is incorrect at the higher pressures produced by compressed air. For accurate flow measurements, you must consult your flow meter manual for converting CFM to "Standard" CFM. In the diagram below, the flow meter reading (CFM) is converted to SCFM using a Dwyer ball-type flow meter conversion.

Controls:

A good control system is critical for long heater life. Before turning your control system on, you must have sufficient airflow through the heater before applying power. (Applies to heaters without over-temperature protection.) Only qualified individuals should install Convectronics heaters and controls. Follow all applicable electrical codes and use proper wiring, fusing and safety procedures.

Open-Loop (Manual) Control:

This simple method of control uses a manually operated power controller to apply a fixed voltage to the heating element. Using this system, the operator manually adjusts the controller to change heater temperature. Note that if the airflow is suddenly interrupted, the element could fail. The open-loop controller is generally used with Convectronicss Series heaters.

Closed-Loop (Feedback) Control:

A closed-loop heater control system uses a power controller, temperature controller, and thermocouple to provide a constant output temperature, regardless of changes in airflow. The temperature controller also provides a convenient display of your process air temperature.

Power Controller:

Phase angle fired SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) power controls will provide the smoothest power regulation for  Air Heaters.

Temperature Controller:

Use only digital temperature controls with type-K thermocouple inputs. The temperature control output must match the input of the power control. (i.e. 4-20mA, or 0-10VDC).
A standard PID-type control with a wide proportional band setting will work best to minimize temperature overshoot. PID parameters may be auto-tuned, but only at temperatures well below the maximum of the heater. If the temperature rises too high during auto-tune, turn power off immediately.
When using a Solid State Relay power control, the temperature controller cycle time should be set for 100ms or less.

Thermocouple:

Use only a fine-wire (.030" max wire dia.), exposed-junction, type-K thermocouple placed within 1" of the heater exit for accurate temperature readings. Other thermocouple styles, or varying the distance from the heater exit will result in temperature measurement errors and/or heater failure.

Air Flow Conversions:

SCFM = SCFH / 60 = SLPM / 28.3
SLPM = SCFH / 2.12
SCMH = SCFH / 35.3
SCFM = (Pounds of Air Per Minute) / (.080 lbs/ft3)

SCFM = Standard Cubic Feet per Minute
SCFH = Standard Cubic Feet per Hour
SLPM = Standard Liters per Minute
SCMH = Standard Cubic Meters per Hour

Single Phase Wiring:

V = I x R (Volts = Amps x Ohms)
I = W / V (Amps = Watts / Volts)
W = V2/R (Watts = (Volts x Volts) / Ohms)

Use our Ohms Law Calculator

Three Phase Wiring:

Delta Configuration:

R = R1 = R2 = R3
Wdelta = 3(VL2)/R
Wdelta = 1.73 x VL x IL
IP = IL/1.73
VP = VL

Wye Configuration:

R = R1 = R2 = R3
Wwye = (VL2)/R = 3(VP2)/R
Wwye = 1.73 x VL x IP
IP = IL
VP = VL/1.73

Percent Loss of wattage with lower than rated voltages applied:

230-volt heater on 208 volts - 82% (18% loss)
240-volt heater on 208 volts - 75% (25% loss)
480-volt heater on 277 volts - 33% (66% loss)
480-volt heater on 440 volts - 84% (16% loss)
480-volt heater on 318 volts - 44% (56% loss)
550-volt heater on 480 volts - 76% (24% loss)

To convert KiloWatts to BTUs:

Multiply  KW x 3413 = BTUs

°F (Farenheit)=(9/5°C) + 32
°C (Celsius)=5/9 (°F - 32)

Strip Heaters with Offset Terminals

Sords Electric supplies Strip Heaters

Component heaters (Strip, Ring, Band, Cartridge) by themselves meet many heating needs. They can also be integrated into more complex heating systems to provide a complete thermal solution for your heating requirements. Shape and size most often are the determining factor in most heater applications.

Strip heaters are used for heat transfer by conduction or convection to heat liquids, air, gases and surfaces.

Applications:

  • Food warming
  • Freeze and moisture protection
  • Tank and platen heating
  • Packaging
  • Dies and mold heating
  • Autoclaves
  • Ovens
  • Telecom

High Quality, Coiled Alloy Resistor Wire is uniformly spaced over the width and length of the strip heater to assure even heat distribution.
Resistor Wire is Embedded in specially formulated, high-grade refractory mate- rial which both insulates the resistor and transfers heat rapidly to the sheath.

Refractory is then Compressed to Rock- Hardness and high density under tremen- dous hydraulic pressure to maximize heat transfer from coil to sheath. Elements are oven cured at high temperatures to semi- vitrify and mature the refractory.
Maximum Heat Transfer, from the instant the element is first energized, is provided by the high emissivity black oxide finish. El- ements with shiny surfaces do not transfer heat as well.

Strip Heaters can have parallel terminals, one terminal at each end and offset terminals, the most common.

Housings can be purchased for the terminals as an options.
