The ATC 500 Series Temperature Controller TC PID Controller from Automatic Timing & Controls is an industrial grade TC/PID controller.  It comes standard with a dual 4-digit 7-segment LED display and 17 selectable inputs (T/C, RTD, current and voltage).

Other features include auto-tune, Celsius and Fahrenheit selectable scale, choice of outputs (relay, SSR, current, voltage), heat-cool control, ramp-soak, soft start, led indicators and RS485 communication. The ATC 500 Series TC PID Controller is also UL approved and CE certified.

Thermocouples, the most common type of sensor for Temperature Controllers

  • Types E, J, K, T, and N are base-metal thermocouples that are used for sensing lower temperatures. They cannot be used for sensing high temperatures because of their relatively low melting point and slower failure due to oxidation.
  • Type J (Fe/Cu-Ni) thermocouples are widely used in industry due to their high thermopower and low cost. This type of thermocouple has an operating temperature range from 0 oC to +760  oC.
  • Type K (Ni-Cr/Ni-Al) thermocouples are also widely used in the industry. It has high thermopower and good resistance to oxidation. The operating temperature range of a Type K thermocouple is from -269 oC to +1260 oC. However, this thermocouple performs rather poorly in reducing atmospheres.

Air heaters work by continuously passing air/fluid over a heated element. This air/fluid is heated and then discharged from the heater, giving a consistent supply of reliable heat. The material being heated can either be inert gas, compressed air or air from a regenerative blower. Unfiltered gas that may contain dirt, grease, oil, oil vapors, corrosive or reactive gases along with volatile or combustible gases should never be used. It should be noted that material should always be flowing over the element before and even after power is supplied to the heater or the result may be overheating of the element and reduced life.

Optimum heater life is achieved by operating the
element within its specified performance characteristics and monitoring the element temperature. Elements operating outside their recommended limits will glow beyond the midsection of the heated length.


Best operating results will be obtained by using a thermocouple feedback temperature control and phase angle power control. When using only a voltage control extra caution should be taken. Apply voltage to the heater until the desired air temperature is obtained.

Air Heater Selection:

When selecting a heater you must first determine the power required to heat air. This can be done by using the following formula:  


Power (Kilowatts) = [(SCFM x Delta T) / 3000] x 1.2

SCFM   = Standard cubic feet per minute
Delta T = Temperature (exit) - Temperature (inlet)
                  In Degrees Fahrenheit


When selecting heaters it is important that a good control system is also selected. A good control system is critical for long heater life. Convectronics offers open-loop (manual) controls, closed-loop (feedback) controls and all the components necessary to run Convectroncs heaters.

The Convectronics Power Control Module Part # 006-10062 offers infinitely variable phase control when used with resistive loads up to 25 amps. The solid state circuitry provides modified transient suppression, exceptional stability and life. An external potentiometer/switch (dial plate and knob included) is used to control output voltage. A trimming potentiometer is mounted on top of the module to adjust turn on voltage level. This device should be installed in a circuit fused at 120% rated load or 30 amps maximum.

These controls provide phase angle proportional control of our fast responding heaters. They are available in single and three-phase 240-volt configurations. Each unit comes complete with I2T Rectifier Fuses and a Voltage Limiting Adjustment.

The controls can be operated manually with the addition of the optional Manual Voltage Control, which allows one to vary voltage from zero to full voltage.

The S.C.R power control can be used with a 4-20mA temperature controller for closed loop operation.
