Gavazzi Photo-Electric Proximity switch - PA18

Carlo Gavazzi is proud to announce a new generation of photoelectric sensors in the industry-standard M18 housing size. This next generation PA18 brings new features, longer sensing ranges, and new options - in a housing that is 40% smaller than previous generations!

In addition to being more compact, a new radial design option has an integrated mirror for right angle sensing, thus increasing the sensor’s application potential. Included with every sensor is a new snap mounting bracket that allows for flush mounting with a single jam nut. The new PA18 is also IP69K rated for high pressure/high temperature downs, with ECOLAB certification for food & beverage applications.

Some additional features of the new PA18 include:

Diffuse sensing up to 1m
Retro-reflective sensing up to 6.5m
Polarized retro-reflective sensing up to 5m
Through-beam sensing up to 20m
All models have a potentiometer for easy adjustment of sensing range
Two easily viewable LED indicators for signal quality and power and target detection
Can withstand high temperature (80°C/176°F) and high pressure (1450 psi/100bar) cleaning
Laser printing replaces labels…so key information stays intact even after cleaning
Normally open and normally closed outputs in every sensor
Supply voltage 10-30 VDC
Connection options include 2m cable or M12 quick-disconnect plug

With the launch of the next generation PA18, we will be phasing out the older generation. A complete cross-reference from the older series to the newer types can be found by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.

The next-generation PA18 has been designed to solve more applications, in more industries, with more flexibility, more sensing range, and more options than ever before! In short, it gives you more ….for less! And with cULus and CE approvals, and ECOLAB certification, you can be confident that the PA18 is a high quality, safe, and durable sensor.

LASER Switches

Laser switches are photo Electric Switches with a punch.
Our Laser PhotoElectric switches take it a step up from the standard visible or infrared light photo electric switches.
Using a laser, usually red, the laser switch offers a few advantages over the standard photo switches including longer range and smaller target size.
The Maximum range of our laser switches is 160 feet. If using a thru beam system you the entire 160 feet can be utilized, whereas if retro reflective, then the effective range is 80 feet, to the reflector and back.
The spot size for laser switches if very small and consistant. A standard photo electric switch sends out a beam that is cone shaped, the spot size gets bigger (and weaker) the father it travels. This can lead to inaccuracies and poor beam intensity. The laser switch keeps its’ intensity as well as a consistent beam size. With a laser switch the edge of a product can be sensed on an assembly line for packaging or sorting applications.
Laser Switches, starting around 100.00, can be a great solution to a sensing application. Let Sords Electric help you pick out a Laser switch.

PhotoElectric Switches and Sensors

Sords Electric Sells Photo Electric Switches and Sensors

Photoelectric switches use a light source to detect an object. The switch then changes it's logic or switch to make an action, like an alarm or movement of a device.

The photoelectric switch uses either visible light or infrared light as it's source. The object being sensed should be reflective for a diffuse switch or the use of a reflector is required and the object breaks "the beam" as in an elevator or garage door switch.

A thru beam system utilizes a transmitter and receiver. the Transmitter sends out the light beam and is directed at a receiver unit. Both units need to be powered and interconnected together for the system to work. Advantages are the longest field of view is achieved and the most secure sensing is realized via polarization. The main disadvantage is that each unit must be wired and interconnected together. A "thru beam" system can also be utilized using a reflector. this is called retro-reflective. The retro-reflective system has the advantage over a thru beam of all the logic and power supply being located in one box and one area. It is also more secure like the thru beam system by using polarizing filters that turn the light and only allow the correct "polarization" to be sensed by the receiver. The retro-reflective unit as the receiver and transmitter housed in a single unit. Thru Beam and Retro-reflective systems are used for counting, sorting and sensing the presence of an object or person for safety or security reasons.

The Diffuse system relies on the object being reflective, these are usually used in an industrial setting sensing a product or color code or marking on a product or box. Like the retro-reflective unit the transmitter and receiver are in the same unit. The distance is usually quite short so that the reflected light is able to be sensed. The target does not usually have the reflective qualities of a reflector. A diffuse system is used when a thru beam or retro-reflective cannot be used or when sensing color or a bar code.

All Photo Electric systems need an output to communicate with the PLC or system logic. Most use NPN or PNP logic but some have built in relays (1 amp usually) to give the output signal. The signal can go to a computer, PLC or directly to the system like a motor or contactor or alarm.

Call Sords Electric for more information or for application help.
