Gavazzi Solid State Relays - RGC series

CARLO GAVAZZI is proud to announce our newest generation of
solid state relays and contactors, the RG Series. This new range of AC and
DC solid state switching devices is an ideal solution for switching
resistive, slightly inductive and motor loads, thanks to the reduced size
per unit - starting at only 17.5mm width, up to 85AAC (15Hp) switching,
nominal ratings at 40ºC and high SCCR rating of 100kA.

RGS Solid State Relay: The RGS Series provides the market with the slimmest
single phase SSR of its kind, with merely 17.5mm of width. Maximum output
voltage is 600VAC with a current rating of 90AAC (with proper heat sink).
Both the AC and DC control versions are available covering a wide range of
input voltages.

RGC Solid State Contactors: This series offers an integrated heat sink solid
state solution with the smallest frame size rating of 20 & 23AAC (£3Hp) in
just a 17.5mm width, 30AAC/5Hp (22.5mm wide), 40AAC/7.5Hp (35mm wide)
60AAC/10Hp and 85AAC/15Hp (70mm width). Ratings are specified with a
surrounding temperature of 40ºC with derating available up to 80ºC. The RGH
Series distinguishes itself from the RGC Series with its higher blocking
voltage of 1600Vp and high I2T values, thus making the RGH Series ideal when
protection by MCBs is desired.

RGS1D/RGC1D DC Output Solid State Relays: This new series of 1-phase solid
state DC relays is primarily intended for switching of strings in
photovoltaic panels. The output voltage ratings cover the voltage range of
24 to 1,000VDC. The RGS1D Series is rated up to maximum rating of 25ADC
(with proper heatsink), while the RGC1D Series (which is an integrated heat
sink solution in a 17.5mm width) is rated up to 15ADC, with a surrounding
ambient temperature of 60ºC.

NFPA 70E Workplace Electrical Safety Standards apply to MCC’s and switchgear and also to plugs & receptacles used to connect welders, pumps, and other portable equipment. Because many of the plugs and receptacles currently in service have accessible live parts and can be hazardous if connected or disconnected under load, users must either update their equipment or follow cumbersome safety procedures in order to comply with NFPA 70E.

The separated plug and receptacle provides visual verification of equipment disconnection as required in NFPA 70E.

Sections 430.102 – 430.109 of the National Electric Code require approved disconnecting means to be located in a readily accessible location within sight of the motor and driven equipment. With their UL & CSA ratings for “Motor Circuit Disconnect Switching” and “Branch Circuit Disconnect Switching”, Decontactor devices are an approved ‘line of sight’ disconnect switch for meeting this requirement.

Replacement motors and equipment that are pre-wired with Decontactor devices can be installed with plug & play simplicity, reducing change-out downtime by 50% and allowing critical processes to get back online faster.

The need for hard-wiring during downtime is eliminated and mechanics can safely make & break the electrical connections.
There is no need to bring electricians to the site; their work to pre-wire replacements can be performed during non-downtime periods.
Advance verification of phasing on pre-wired replacement motors avoids problems and delays due to improper rotation.
Integral auxiliary contacts can eliminate the need to make & break secondary connections on control circuits.

It provides a cost effective solution for most metering applications, allowing an effective energy measurement without the need for an external current transformer. This ultra-compact device can easily be interfaced with a PLC, thanks to its optional pulse output (1 Wh resolution). It is ideal for use in public buildings, offices, condominiums, apartments and in most facilities that require energy cost sharing and the metering of common loads. Sords Electric and Carlo Gavazzi bring you a new simple Photo Electric sensor design. The Carlo Gavazzi Radial design is new to the industry.

The Carlo Gavazzi PA18C.R... is part of a family of inexpensive general purpose retro-reflective sensors in industrial standard 18 mm cylindrical ABS housing. The sensors are useful in applications where high- accuracy detection as well as small size is required.

Compact housing and high power LED for excellent performance-size ratio. The potentiometer used for adjustment of the sensitivity makes the sensors highly flexible. The output type is NPN or PNP and the output switching function is NO and NC.

The sensor contains IR trans- mitter, receiver and amplifier with transistor or SCR output. The light source is a Ga-As diode emitting infrared light.

The conical tip of the sensor forms an angle of 90oC. This angle acts as a prism, i.e. the beam, emitted from the Ga-As diode placed in one side of the sensor head, is reflect- ed internally to the phototransistor placed in the other side of the sensor head, provided that the tip of the sensor is situated in free air. If the sensor tip is immersed in a liquid, always having a refractive index different from air, the beam will not be refracted by the prism and the photo transistor will not receive any signal.

The sensor types can operate in oil, waste water, aqueous solutions such as beer, wine, alcohol etc. without any kind of accessory.

A photoelectric sensor, or photoeye, is a device used to detect the distance, absence, or presence of an object by using a light transmitter, often infrared, and a photoelectric receiver. They are used extensively in industrial manufacturing. There are three different functional types: opposed (a.k.a. through beam), retroreflective, and proximity-sensing (a.k.a. diffused).

Types of Photo Electrics

Diffuse-Reflective Photoelectric Sensors

In diffuse-reflective photoelectric sensors, the emitter and receiver are integrated in the same unit. The emitter generates a modulated light beam. An object placed in front of the photoelectric sensor will reflect diffused light at all angles with a certain intensity (reflectivity) depend- ing on its surface, size, color and distance from the sensor. The output changes state if the receiver senses sufficient light. Emitter and receiver are synchronized to reduce interference from ambient light. The sensing distance can be adjusted by potentiometer or by teach-in.

Diffuse-Reflective Photoelectric Sensors with Background Suppression

Diffuse-reflective photoelectric sensors with background suppression avoid false signals caused by shiny backgrounds by suppressing all light reflected behind the target object. It is the angle of reflected light that is sensed and not only the intensity that makes it possible to distinguish between an object and a background. The background can therefore reflect more light than the actual object without causing a false signal. Only light reflected in front of the background will cause a change in the output state. The background suppression is adjustable within a certain range and can be done either electrically or manually.

Polarized Retro-Reflective Photoelectric Sensors

With retro-reflective photoelectric sensors, the emitter and receiver are integrated in the same unit. The emitter generates a modulated light beam, which, if reflected by a reflector or special reflective tape, is sensed by the receiver. The output changes state if an object interrupts the light reflected by the reflector. Emitter and receiver are synchronized to reduce interference from ambient light. In certain types the sensing distance can be adjusted by potentiometer or by teach-in. To increase immunity from targets with highly reflective surfaces, a retro reflective sensor can be equipped with polarization filters (anti-glare filters).

Through-Beam Photoelectric Sensors

Through-beam photoelectric sensors have a separate emitter and receiver unit. The switching element changes state when an object interrupts the modulated light beam between the emitter and receiver. The amplifier stage can be in a separate unit or self-contained in the receiver unit. In separate amplifier types, emitter and receiver are electrically synchronized. In other types, the sensitivity of the receiver element is adjusted by potentiometer or by teach-in.

Fiber Optic Photoelectric Sensors

A fiber optic sensor can be configured as a diffuse or through- beam sensor depending on the fibers attached. The advantage of using fibers is that they can enter areas where standard sensors cannot be mounted. Safe operation in high temperature, vibrations, large electro magnetic fields etc. can be achieved.

Contrast Photoelectric Sensors

Contrast sensors are used for detecting color marks on items such as labels. The sensor works like a standard diffuse sensor with the difference being that the light beam is con- centrated to a small spot. The emitter uses white light and the receiver is optimized to distinguish between several shades of gray tones from a scale ranking from black to white.

Color Photoelectric Sensors

The color sensor can detect real colors. The emitter, consisting of three LEDs (red, green and blue), emits light to the object; the reflected light is analyzed by the receiver circuit and compared with the stored reference signal. The output chang- es state if the received signal is within the selected toler- ances. The sensor consists of an amplifier and detachable fiber heads with different focus distance. The sensor can be used for both reflective as well as transparent materials.

Slotted Photoelectric Sensors

The sensor is a through beam sensor where the emitter and receiver are mounted in each side of the slot on the sensor. The sensor can be set up to detect the smallest variation of light interruption and can therefore be used for detecting a label from its carrier foil.

Fire Shield Surge Strips for College Students

Fire Shield is a next generation extension cord with built-in intelligence to sense cord damage and shut off the power before a fire can start. No other extension cord has this capability.

Industry statistics indicate there is a cord fire approximately every 6 minutes. The most frequent causes of such fires are short circuits, overloading, damage, and/or misuse of extension cords.

A special shield surrounds each of the insulated conductors of the Fire Shield Extension Cord. The shield is continuously monitored by electronics in the plug head. When a dangerous electrical condition is detected by current leaking to the shield, power is shut off before a fire can start.

Fire Shield differ from GFCI's and ground conductors. Grounded conductors only provide a path to ground. GFCI’s detect ground faults. Neither detects the breakdown in the insulation of a standard extension cord, which can lead to an arcing condition that may start a fire. By utilizing a sensing shield around the insulated Fire Shield conductors combined with intelligent electronics in the plug head, Fire Shield can detect damage in the cord such as series faults (broken and frayed conductors) and parallel faults (insulation damage between the live conductors), and shut off the power before a fire can start.

Unintentional misuse of extension cords is the main reason for cord fires. Cords may be crimped, pinched, frayed, overloaded, overheated, or just worn out. Any of these conditions can lead to an extension cord fire. Fire Shield can detect any leakage currents from these conditions and shut off power before a fire can occur.

The cord fire protection is a function of the special shield and relates to the Fire Shield extension cord only.

Fire Shiled should be used anywhere you use standard extension cords or power strips; in children’s rooms, pet areas, with space heaters, electric blankets, waterbeds, etc. Children and pets have been known to bite or chew electrical cords. Fire Shield, with its built-in intelligence may provide protection in these circumstances. Fire Shield Safety Extension Cords should also be used during the holidays with Christmas trees and other holiday decorations because of the tendency to overload extension cords.

Standard surge protectors only provide protection against power surges, which is important. However, standard surge protectors do not provide cord fire prevention. TRC has recently introduced a next generation line of Fire Shield Surge Protectors that not only protects against power surges, but also provides cord fire prevention.

Fire Shield cords are now required at many collegesas the only power strip allowed in college dorms. This is due to students overloading the strips, or tacking the cords to walls or pinching the cords between doors or around corners. All these issues can and will cause fires.

As winter is upon us, it is time to think of freeze protection and keeping pipes warm. Heating Cable is one way to do this, we sell electric heat trace. All heat tracing requires INSULATION. It will not work without it.

There are two main types of heating cable; self regulating and constant wattage.

Self-regulating cable
Self Regulating Heating Cable has two parallel conductors or bus wires extruded in a polymer core. The core's resistance changes porportionally with temperature.

The key to understanding Self-regulating cable is the output adjusts proportionally to the cable sheath temperature not the temperature of the pipe heated.

There is no direct feed back for the pipe temperature. Most self-regulating cables are designed to give their rated wattage at 50 degrees F. The wattage output willexceed the rated wattage when the cable temperature is below 50 degrees and the lower the cable temperature the larger this wattage i.e. amperage is. INRUSH!! A high start up current is the result. Tight temperature control is also more difficult with self-regulating cable, because the wattage output is always changing seeking 50 degrees F on the cable not the pipe or fluid in the pipe.

Self-regulating cable works quite well for freeze protection applications. Freeze protection and low temperature applications that do not require very tight control. The inrush can be considered on the design of wiring and breakers, and there are some other cost savings to consider. A thermostat is recommended for most applications. However, when there are several very short runs or several pipe size changes one ambient thermostat can save on a job.

The semi-conductive core contains a graphite network, which allows electricity to flow from one bus wire to the other. When the core is dense and colder, there are many paths for electricity to take through the graphite network, producing more heat.

Since the core material expands as it heats, the graphite network is elongated, disrupting some of the paths. More and more paths are disrupted as heating continues until the system reaches self-controlled thermal stability. When the core material cools it contracts, reconnecting some of the electrical paths in the graphite network, and more equivalent heat is produced.

This temperature response occurs independently at each point along the heater. If an externally produced high temperature occurs next to a low temperature in the cable, each section of heating cable will adjust its own heat output in relation to its own local requirements.

Constant Wattage Cable is made up with two parallel conductors or wires. These wires have a heater wire wrapped around and connected in approximately 2-foot intervals in parallel. This design provides constant wattage output or a uniform output all along its length. The heater wires are designed such that if any section of cable should fail the rest of the heater would continue to operate without change.
Constant wattage cable should NOT be overlaped. The effect of double the wattage where the cable crosses will cause high temp failures.
The constant wattage output makes maintaining higher and more accurate process temperatures easier. This cable is well suited for freeze protection and many low temp process control applications.
This cable can be cut in the field. When terminated the last 2-foot heater section becomes a cold sections "unheated". This provides an unheated section of cable to penetrate the insulation, enter the junction box and make up power connections. Constant Wattage Cable needs a thermostat on each pipe and each pipe size in order to maintain accurate temperature control.
